Games
For a long time I felt the need to come out in my paintings, these dramas that I staged, directed, designed, lit -I wanted to feel what the actors, my models, felt. To be in the painting and outside it, to come upon myself as one does framed in a shop
window or an unexpected mirror -that is how others see you, not how you show yourself to others, always behind the mask of authorship. Yet at the same time, I dreaded this.
One day male models didn't show up for a session. I had to take their place. I examined my role, my script, my life. I showed my face; I recognized myself.
The Games is the result of this experiment. In subsequent sessions, I used as models friends and collaborators -accomplices -Jose Luis and Maria, fearing I wouldn't like what developed, a strange and possibly unsettling juxtaposition of life options. I also painted my models, Concha and Cristina, sometimes
independently and sometimes with myself as a fellow actor.
And so The Games is about role-playing, but in the drama that life writes for us; the coincidences, fluctuations, instincts, the unconscious gestures, the dreams and the reality. The magic stage of life, in which you must play all roles -actor, director,
audience -with God in mind.
